One of the most productive periods in the life of the Dutch painter and important representative of Post-Impressionism Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was the time he spent in Arles. The works reflect the sun-drenched landscapes of southern France. Van Gogh is hopeful: he wants to found an artists' colony in his studio in the Rhône town. He repeatedly portrays the town and its surroundings. The nearby pilgrimage town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, right by the Mediterranean, is surrounded by the Camargue, today a unique nature reserve. The intense blue of the sky, the red of the Mediterranean soil and the solar white of the houses are from now on part of van Gogh's colour palette.
